The National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) was established
in March 1998 under the aegis of the Department of Education and
Science. The Centre has a wide remit in the area of information
and communications technologies (ICT) in education, extending beyond
the use of ICT in schools to cover all educational ICT issues. Its
main tasks are to manage the implementation of the Government's
Schools IT 2000 initiative and to provide policy advice to the Department
of Education and Science. Key initiatives include: teacher training
in the use of ICTs; sourcing and developing teaching resources;
managing innovative ICT projects in school; developing a national
website for education and facilitating the use of ICT for special
educational needs. The Centre has overseen phase one of Schools
IT 2000 which distributed £25 million in grant aid to primary and
post-primary schools to assist them in develop their ICT infrastructure
and teaching resources. IT 2000 received additional funding of £81
million to implement phase two of this exciting project.
The NCTE works closely with software publishers and digital content
providers in order to provide Irish teachers with quality digital
content - both on CD-ROM and the World Wide Web
